After years of collaboration, Kai has a beguiling new solo project. Drawing from past experiences but seeking to explore new sonic terrain, Kai has written a set of songs that is set to establish him as one of Nashville’s most unique voices. Tracks like “Perpetually Out Of Fashion” distill years of Kai’s musical influences - folk, indie, and a strong pop sensibility - into mere minutes, making for a listening experience that refreshingly defies genre and leaves us like a late-night snacker - satisfied but secretly hoping for more. “Sweet Abandon” is a bare bones slow waltz that showcases Kai’s yearning vocals atop a warm backdrop of old-time strings. These tracks are just a sampling of what listeners can expect from his Perpetually Out Of Fashion EP, to be released later this year. Recorded and self-produced, the Perpetually Out Of Fashion EP also showcases his instrumental talents – he played almost every instrument himself – as well as cameos from a few distinguished friends (his critically-acclaimed roommate Langhorne Slim sings a background vocal on “Baby Where”, and inimitable Appalachian fiddler Rayna Gellert shows up on “Sweet Abandon”).

Comes in a hand-crafted Stumptown Printers Package, with artwork by Shawn Hall.

Baby Where? 04:30
Everybody's looking at me everybody's saying sorry I'm just floating into space How I can walk down the street? When it falls away beneath my feet how can I speak when I can't breathe? Everybody wants to know baby where you're gonna go I can't tell em and neither can you You say you love me but you ain't ready You wanna leave me, but you ain't ready Ah what am I supposed to do? I got no other place to go Lovin you's about the only thing I know CH: Baby where you gonna go? Without me now Where you gonna go? Without me now And who'm I gonna hold? Without you now, without you now Now the days pass just a little faster people ask I say it's no disaster but I still dream of you at night And if one day you came around to build this back up from the ground how could I ever forget? How I was old and you were young I was deaf and you were dumb CH: Baby where you gonna go? Without me now Where you gonna go? It's cold out And who'm I gonna hold? Without you now Without you now

I'ma waking up early in the morning Just me and the sun…rise And a clear blue sky The birds are singing sweet and easy And if they have a song to sing Well then so do i I got this feeling and it's hard to explain it but I know that it's right (I know that it's right) Like every little thing I ever wanted or dreamed of Well it's already mine (weird chord) already mine So this is an ordinary morning Half the people awake Half the people are still asleep and dreaming away The grocer organizes oranges The ferry whistle blows It just keeps going going going gone I got this feeling and it's hard to explain it but I know that it's right Like every little thing I ever wanted or dreamed of Well it's already mine Somewhere in time (2nd chorus)

like a record revolves beneath the weight of the needle like the calm chords resolve with a strength all their own there's a sound in the dark, there's a bird in the hollow calling me round the bend, where there's no way to know So I step out again, sweet abandon I breathe in the air of the free and the damned you can't put a price on the feeling of standing at the edge of your little world, where your luck meets the land ooooh From the towering walls of sierra nevada to the colors of fall in my Tennessee home some are searching in vain at the back of a theater in the front row of a church pew still there's no way to know So I step out again, sweet abandon I breathe in the air of the free and the damned you can't put a price on the feeling of standing at the edge of your little world, where your luck meets the land Instrumental Oh she waltzes again, sweet abandon I breathe in the air of the free and the damned from the peaks to the plains, echoing through the canyons at the edge of your little world, where your luck meets the land

about

Stand-outs like the slow burning title track, and haunting “Sweet Abandon” will keep you coming back to this potent collection of songs. This EP brings much delayed satisfaction as Kai's sophomore release. It was recorded over a period of a year, with the help of a few friends, amidst his full schedule of producing, scoring, and spearheading multi-day music adventures through some of America's most beautiful scenery (www.musicforwildplaces.com).
